Djibouti tobacco warnings

Djibouti's requirements for 9 health warning messages comes into effect in 2009. The law brings the following measures into effect (roughly translated from the French decree.):

  • Each package, carton or other container must display the French equivalent of "sales authorized in the Republic of Djibouti"

  • Each package, carton or other container  must show the date of manufacture and the manufacturing lot number.

  • Each manufacturer must follow direction from the Ministry with respect to display messages on accessories, interior of packaging, on the cigarette, on the cellophane or other transparent covering, on boxes or packages even if they are not seen by the consumer.

  • Retailers must display required messages at point of sale.

  • Health warning messages must appear on tobacco product packages. The warnings must take up 50% of the principal display space. These warnings will be established annually by the Minister of Health.

  • Supplementary messages are also required to be printed on the side panels or other places on tobacco packages.

  • Health warning messages must appear in French and Arabic. Other languages may also be required.

  • Manufacturers have 9 months to bring labelling on their products up to standards.

  • Tobacco products must be sold in packages that meet the size and dimensions set out in regulations. Empty containers or slides cannot be sold.
