the United States Dr. Stanton A. Glantz, Director of the UCSF
Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, has been
actively seeking changes to smoking in movies on a global basis,
but particularly in Hollywood. He is author to several papers
and studies to do with smoking in movies and is involved with
Smoke Free Movies, a group which aims to sharply reduce the U.S.
film industry's usefulness to Big Tobacco's domestic and global
marketing. Check out:
www.smokefreemovies.ucsf.edu They suggest the following
steps to target the film industry: |
1. Certify No Pay-Offs
2. Require Strong Anti-Smoking Ads
3. Stop Identifying Tobacco Brands
4. Rate New Smoking Movies "R"

“More than one such expletive must lead the Rating Board to issue a film
an R rating, as must even one of these words used in a sexual context.
These films can be rated less severely, however, if by a special vote,
the Rating Board feels that a lesser rating would more responsibly
reflect the opinion of American parents.”
