Trade-mark registration gives insight into the marketing intentions of Canada’s tobacco companies. If new marketing measures are on the horizon, there's a strong likelihood that trade-marks are involved.

So what can we guess from the registrations of early 1998?

Rothmans, Benson & Hedges may be planning new rock-music promotions

This year they registered a new name for rock-concerts, and added to their stable of "graffiti-rock" designs.

Locofest (Application Number 0870870) was registered for the purpose of "Sponsorship and promotion of concert tours, touring artists or concert events.". The application was filed March 2, 1998, and approved July 20, 1998.

RBH is adding to its suite of rock-music trade marks.

Graffiti Rock (Registration Number TMA443346) was registered on May 26, 1995 for use on "Printed publications, namely brochures, flyers, newsletters and posters." After that, two executions of "Rock and Design," were submitted, both intended to support:

"sponsorship of concert tours; sponsorship of bar programs, namely video concerts shown on a screen in a bar and/or live concerts performed in bar; educational services, namely the provision of financial and logistical support (provision of studio and recording time) for up-and-coming and/or inexperienced musicians for the purpose of increasing their experience and exposure.

Rothmans, Benson and Hedges may be planning further integration into retailing

On 5 June, 1998 they received approval to trade-mark the name "Retail Services Institute" (Application No. 0809624). They proposed to use this name on services and products to:

 This service to retailers builds on the retail security offered by Rothmans, Benson & Hedges, and registered under the name "STOREWATCH" (Registration number TMA447573, registered 15 September 1995).

On February 17, 1998, RBH applied to register Classique Exquise/Classic Smooth. (Application Number 0869459)

And which of RBH’s brands is destined to carry the new cityscape design (Application number 0869743), which was approved on July 6, 1998 (see above).

Imperial Tobacco may have more 'racing' promotions in mind

On March 11, 1998, Imperial filed to use "Formula 1" as a trade-mark for tobacco products (Registration Number TMA157806)

 

Imperial Tobacco may be planning to 'olde-date' its look

Imperial has a brand-spanking new application for a very olde-style label (Filed 11 march 1998, Registration Number TMA277895)

– and is in a trade-mark dispute with the Sumatra Tobacco Company over its claim of colour as a feature of the Player’s Hero design. (Filed 12 August 1997, Opposition by Sumatra Tobacco Trading Company filed 27 May 1998, Application Number 0853329)

Imperial also received approval for some novel reworkings of the Player’s logo, including a printed tobacco leaf (Application Number 0865257, application filed 24 December 1997)
