More Trade Mark Tracking

Web-technology now allows almost instant access to Industry Canada’s data base of trade-marks. Check it out yourself!

Trade-mark registration gives insight into the marketing intentions of Canada’s tobacco companies. If new marketing measures are on the horizon, there's a strong likelihood that trade-marks are involved.

So what can we guess from the registrations of 2001?

The OTHER Imperial Tobacco may be intending to enter the Canadian tobacco market.

(Imperial Tobacco Canada is a branch of the Multinational BAT; Imperial Tobacco is a separate British Company which only recently has expanded to international sales)

Imperial Tobacco U.K. has registered many brands, including:

Black Anchor - for "Clothing, footwear, headgear; tobacco, whether manufactured or
unmanufactured; tobacco products; tobacco substitutes, none being for
medicinal of curative purposes; smokers' articles and matches."

The registration says Black Anchor has been used in CANADA since at least as early as April 30, 2000

Imperial Tobacco has also  registered name "Columbus" and the brands "Fusion," "Horizon" "Regal" and "L&B."

Japan Tobacco may be planning to market Mild Seven in Canada -- and has registered versions of its best selling international brand without the contentious term "Mild."

JTI has registered the terms "M*Seven," "My Seven" and "Mild Seven Airspeed Team"

Mild Seven is the world's second-largest selling brand (second only to Marlboro, according to World Tobacco File).  It yet been introduced into Canada.  The recent registration of Mild Seven Outdoor Quest may indicate HOW Japan Tobacco would want to market this brand - as a service - to Canadians:

"MILD SEVEN OUTDOOR QUEST & DESIGN:  SERVICES:
(1) Vocational education in the field of mechanics; educational services namely conducting classes in the field of mechanics; entertainment in the nature of on-going television programs; amusement centers; amusement arcades; entertainment in the nature of amusement park ride; organization of sports competition, training of animals, modeling for artists, publication of books, mobile library, club services.

Japan Tobacco may have a patented a genetically modified tobacco seed.

JTI has registered two names to sell genetically modified seeds & technology
